An Intense eGames Grand Final Sees Canada’s Ally Victorious in Super Smash Bros. Tournament

As the sun set yesterday over the tranquil surroundings of Rio De Janeiro's Parque Lage, the atmosphere inside British House was anything but as eight top players from around the globe went head to head on Super Smash Bros. for Wii U as part of the eGames Showcase.

The players competed in a double elimination tournament and after rounds of intense combat, two were left standing – Ally from Canada and Larry Lurr from the USA.

The final was an extremely tight affair, with Ally just edging out Larry Lurr 3-2 to claim the Gold medal for Canada. In the Bronze medal clash, Britain's J.Miller was defeated by Mexico's MKLeo.

A naturally jubilant Ally commented:

"Being the first Super Smash Bros. Gold medalist feels magical. Not everyone gets this chance. I'm looking forward to future eGames. I will gratefully attend the next one if given the chance to represent Canada."

"I think this creates a huge opportunity for people who wish to see their country play with the best; some players never get the chance to travel and this made their wishes come true. This is what I'd like to see more of in the future, the best players in each country playing each other."

Ally, who is currently the world's number one Super Smash Bros. player, having won the top prize at EVO 2016, was also delighted with the tournament:

"I had a great experience at the eGames showcase in Rio, it was run efficiently and was greatly watched."

Larry Lurr was disappointed by the result, but thrilled by the impact of the event:

"I think the eGames and this competition will do nothing but great things for eSports. It will help it grow, it will show not only casual viewers, but I would say investors and people who want to get into eSports, that it's something that is well worth getting into and something that's here to stay."
